The Name Zija
The origin of the name Zija results from modern science and ancient wisdom. The "Z" is derived from one of the most unique characteristics of the Zija beverage, Z-Atin™, an all-natural metabolic trigger that allows your body to absorb the wealth of vitamins, minerals and nutrients in Zija.
The "ija" part of the Zija name is from the ancient languages used to describe the Moringa plant. There are many ancient references to Moringa with the first written references in 150 B.C., and oral traditions from thousands of years before that, in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The oral, traditional stories of the plant and its "miracle" traits were passed from generation to generation by sages known as "rishis." The term 'Ayurvedic' itself is derived from two ancient Sanskrit words, "ayu" meaning life and "veda" meaning knowledge. Ayurvedic medicine, like most traditional eastern medicines, provides nutritive and preventive medicine while traditional western medicine is generally reactive and responsive to disease. Instead of creating a medicinal or synthetic product, Zija is made with the most beneficial parts of the Moringa plant to provide the body with bio-available nutrients enabling the body to age gracefully, while fortifying itself to ensure a healthy and happy life. Zija combines Mother Nature's wisdom with the philosophies of nutrition and prevention in eastern medicine and the increased nutritional needs in the western world due to processed and nutrient depleted foods.

While there are hundreds of folk remedy uses of Moringa, the healthful benefits of the plant were not generally put into use until the late 1990's. Actually, charitable and humanitarian groups, faced with a malnutrition crisis in West Africa in the last decade, were the first to promote the nutritional use of Moringa. Not only was malnutrition eliminated by those using Moringa in their diets, the nutritional benefits through the increased absorption of vitamins and minerals eliminated the incidence of childhood blindness caused by vitamin deficiencies in thousands of African children. Stories of these humanitarian efforts and their successes along with further research and discoveries into the tremendous Moringa benefits by David Andrews led to the creation of Zija International.
A surprise discovery occurred during the company's formulation of various parts of Moringa to maximize its nutritional benefits. During random testing, there were observations indicating people's metabolic rates changed when drinking Zija. Upon further investigation, Zija International discovered a natural metabolic 'trigger' had been created when it combined different parts of Moringa in its proprietary formula. We now know that the precise combination of various parts of Moringa provides the best nutrient compounds in Zija responsible for the ultra-fast, effective absorption and use of all of Zija's nutrients. The metabolic trigger compounds now known as "Z-Atin" is naturally occurring in Moringa and is only available in Zija.

David Andrews, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zija, first learned of the various successful humanitarian efforts associated with Moringa in 2000. Over the next several years, he researched the plant, its benefits and where and how it was grown. He also learned of its attributes and researched how it could be made into a commercial product for the entire world. During this period, Andrews was told that there was not a commercial application for this plant and that there would not be a demand or a need for Moringa in the Western world. Still determined to succeed in bringing this wonderful gift to the rest of the world, Andrews worked with growers and suppliers on three continents, developed processing procedures and found uses for parts of the plant that were previously not known. The identification of both the metabolic trigger and the most potent anti-aging compound ever found came out of this research and development process. The anti-aging compound, a cytokinin, is responsible for cell growth and rejuvenation. The quantities of this cytokinin found naturally in Moringa is 2,000 times greater than the amounts found in any plant discovered and identified so far. This powerful cytokinin, in conjunction with other beneficial Moringa nutrients, became identified as the trademarked word Z-Atin. The concept of providing Moringa, with Z-Atin and the anti-aging cytokinin, to the world resulted in the formation of Zija International in 2004. Zija International is the only company in the world providing the beneficial parts of Moringa in the beverage, Zija. The Zija product is the beneficiary of multiple patent claims in a United States patent application filed by Zija International.
